  • Description

In English there is the expression "to pull at one "s heartstrings". In German, there is no direct translation for this image. But now, fortunately, somehow there is, in the form of this album. Because when listening to EXILE IN SPACE, something inside plucks and tugs, pulls and stretches, usually about where most people suspect the heart to be. Melancholy just doesn't fit, is also a much too worn out term in music and has no place here. What ENIK and the PARANORMAL STRING QUARTET create on EXILE IN SPACE in these eight musical gems goes deeper. Great sentences like: "Don "t pick up the Phone, it could be your mother! She wont candycrush herself out of this mess.", Enik has a terse robot voice recite in poem form in "Electric Sheep", while in the background an omnichord and a cello discuss which of the two is actually lonelier than the other. "TRUE MF", previously known by ENIK Solo as a real dancefloor banger, gets new dimensions (quite a few, actually) with decelerated, warm but still never and never cheesy string parts. These paranormal additions keep ENIK if necessary also sometimes on the ground - or rather in the cozy, warm room at the window, when he sings in the title track with Cervantes in his head about the rather less cozy world situation and dreams of exile in space (EXILE IN SPACE). In KANGAROO, Enik converses with a dead kangaroo, which abruptly admonishes him of his own transience and thus heartbreakingly questions the protagonist's excessive life. The song ends in a three-minute elegiac string improvisation, which for Enik personally, is the absolute highlight of this album. As a listener, you are left with the grating BETTY LEE at the end. A song that could well be 70 years old, but at the same time points forward into the future. All in all, eight sparkling, weird, organic and loving songs that reach from the heart to outer space. Which brings us back to the "heartstrings" and what has not yet been revealed here: What the English expression "to pull at one's heartstrings" means in German. But ENIK and the PARANORMAL STRING QUARTET are the experts for that.
