Danish folk and jazz quartet TINGO return with Medvind Modvind, an album of original compositions and reworked Scandinavian folk melodies shaped by the interplay of trumpet, saxophone, double bass and drums. Drawing on Nordic folk traditions alongside modern jazz and improvisation, the cordless quartet creates an open, spacious sound in which melodies and rhythms constantly weave around one another. Formed in 2019 after trumpeter Tim Ewe and saxophonist Cecilie Strange met by chance on a train between Odense and Copenhagen and discovered a shared interest in Nordic folk music, TINGO also features drummer Per Rask and bassist Benjamin Gower-Poole. All four musicians studied at the Danish National Academy of Music in Odense, where their interest in the meeting point between jazz and Nordic folk developed into the quartet's distinctive musical approach. The title Medvind Modvind - "Headwind Tailwind" - comes from the album's title track and reflects the band's idea of wind as a metaphor for the changing forces of life: sometimes pushing us forward, sometimes creating resistance, and sometimes leaving us to drift. The music follows a similar movement, shifting between dense arrangements and the lightest traces of sound as the four instruments intertwine and respond to one another. Medvind Modvind was recorded at Studio Folkhemmet Unnaryd, situated in the Swedish pine forests of Smaland. The band chose the setting as a peaceful environment in which to develop their musical connection, creating the album between walks in the forest and swims in the lake. On the final day, a live audience was invited into the studio, with the title track captured as a live recording from the concert. TINGO's 2023 debut, Kvartetten fra verdens ende, received two Danish Music Award nominations for Best New Jazz Artist and Best New Roots Artist. With Medvind Modvind, the quartet continues to develop its distinctive meeting point between Nordic folk music, jazz and collective improvisation.
