Following their successful and critically acclaimed debut album What If, which won the HI FIVE Jazz Award and was included in the German Record Critics' Best of the Year list, the Rainer Bohm Sextet's first live album is now bring released. After performing together for several years at renowned festivals and clubs - including Jazzfest Berlin and Jazzfest Bonn - this recording was made over two evenings in the winter of 2024 at Bird's Eye Basel. The album captures the energy and creativity of each musician, as well as their sheer joy in making music together. In these sessions, the pieces had plenty of time to develop at their own pace. Expansive solo passages, generous room for improvisation, and close ensemble interaction gave rise to sweeping arcs of tension that evolved from evening to evening. The recording also allows us to hear and feel the intimate atmosphere of the club. Six strong and uncompromising musical personalities come together here. Because each possesses an unmistakable voice, a unique band sound emerges that draws on a high degree of individuality. Raw energy and expressivity coexist with sensibility and teamwork. Each player knows when to step back, give the others space, and then move back into the spotlight at just the right moment. This spirit of mutual respect is reflected in the music. Rainer Bohm's compositions often explore the subtle nuances between melancholy and sentiment, and this emotional authenticity gives the music its special quality. His piano playing is fluid, expressive, and rich in tonal textures. The melodic, singing qualities of his lines is always in the foreground. His technical mastery gives him almost unlimited possibilities, but he never pursues virtuosity for its own sake. Musical expression and the sound of the band as a whole are always first in his mind.
