Danish trio Blaly return with their second album, expanding the lyrical, folk-informed sound of their acclaimed debut into a new collection shaped by distance, place and shared musical connection. Blending Scandinavian folk traditions, jazz, Nordic lyricism and chamber-like interplay, the trio continue to favour collective expression over individual virtuosity, creating spacious, melodic music rooted in listening and collaboration. Formed by pianist Barbara Fiig, bassist Johan Kjaer Houver and drummer Timon Matern while studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Blaly developed around a shared interest in music's ability to offer reflection, connection and emotional openness. Their debut album Nystalgi explored themes including parenthood, identity and new beginnings through gentle melodies, colourful harmony and an understated, textural ensemble sound Written while the three musicians were traveling in different countries, the new album reflects both physical distance and the experiences gathered along the way. Ideas emerged in locations stretching from the Portuguese coastline to the rivers of Canada, while the band's close connection to Wales inspired Cymru and Emigrantvisa pays tribute to the Swedish folk tradition. Although composed apart, the music ultimately reflects the trio's longstanding musical relationship and shared approach to collective storytelling Blaly's sound remains centred on Fiig's lyrical piano writing, supported by driving yet understated drum grooves, bowed double bass textures and subtle improvisation. Rather than foregrounding extended solos, the trio prioritise interaction, allowing compositions to unfold through shared ideas, spacious arrangements and close ensemble interplay. The group's name is derived from the Danish word ly, meaning "shelter", reflecting the sense of safety, introspection and community they seek to create through their music. Across this new collection, Blaly continue to develop a distinctive musical language in which jazz, folk and classical influences meet with warmth, restraint and quiet emotional depth.
