The extraordinary 13-track album is a breath-taking interpretation of Anglo-American folk songs from the Appalachian Mountains. It is a journey that echoes traditional English, Scottish and Irish music and its evolution since encountering African-American culture, while creating a space in which the beauty of nostalgia and inevitability of change intersect.
These two compelling improvisers have been deeply influenced by American composer John Jacob Niles, a pivotal figure in the American folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, who collected traditional songs from oral sources giving them new life through his interpretation. In the same manner, Kitchman / Schmidt have reimagined the songs on 'As Long As Songbirds Sing', layering influences of jazz and chamber music – creating a body of work that wouldn't sound out of place on seminal record label ECM Records.
Well known for their critically acclaimed live performances on the UK jazz scene, between them Kitchman / Schmidt have graced some of the most iconic music venues and international festivals, including Queen Elizabeth Hall, Ronnie Scott's, and Union Chapel, as well as performing at the BBC Proms.
Kitchman / Schmidt bring their fresh approach to the musical spirit of the songs and their retelling of these storylines make 'As Long As Songbirds Sing' a strikingly original body of work.
