Description
The unusual combination of two altos in a quintet led by two of the UK's most outstanding saxophonists - Tony Kofi and Alan Barnes. They have put together a brand new rhythm section for this project: pianist John Turville, bassist Adam King and drummer Rod Youngs.
Alan has this to say about his fellow front-man and the recording: "Tony is a very refreshing presence on the UK jazz scene. He seems to have an indefatigable enthusiasm, is always ready to praise the playing of others and never gives less than 100% in performance. He is a heavy - toned, blues - drenched wailer of theJackie McLean/ Cannonball Adderley school - a path that he treads with total commitment.
We put together a list of original yet accessible tunes to both play to our strengths as well as vary the programme. In the studio, the chemistry of the band was instant and we recorded quickly without recourse to many takes.
Tony and I are amiably competitive without being pugilistic and have found a sound and a way to play together that is very enjoyable for both of us. Reactions in clubs and at festivals have so far been great and we have a real gut feeling that this is a band that "has legs"- it will run and run."
