Description

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Figes presents, Sound Dimensions, an eleven-track album of original compositions featuring a twenty-piece orchestra. The project began in 2025 when Figes received an Arts Council grant to write music based on the compositional techniques of three great twentieth century Italian composers: Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono and Ennio Morricone. The resulting suite of music was premiered on 30th July 2025 at the Mount Without (Bristol) and recorded to produce this album. The orchestra consists of the Bristol Ensemble (strings and woodwind), Brigitte Beraha (voice), Ashley John Long (bass), Gaz Williams (electronics), Harriet Riley and Mark Whitlam (percussion), Jerry Crozier-Cole (guitar), and Jim Blomfield (keyboard). Figes conducts.
A new landmark in Figes' compositional journey, the pieces use a variety of techniques which include serialism, chance, atonalism, conventional scoring, tape, electronics and free improvisation. The orchestra, and their fantastic musicianship, offers huge possibilities in combination of sounds.
Kevin Figes is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator whose work bridges jazz, song, improvisation, and experimental music. A former student of Elton Dean and Tim Garland, he has led projects including his long- standing quartet, 4-Sided Triangle, an Octet, and the 15-piece big band Resonation, and collaborated extensively with the late Keith Tippett. His recordings, including Changing Times (2020) and the Wallpaper Music series, have received critical acclaim for their inventive, dynamic compositions.
