  • Description

Larry Sloven and Bruce Bromberg started HighTone Records in 1983. Since that time, the label has gone on to produce over 300 albums in a broad range of roots music styles. The label found success initially with blues guitar hot shot Robert Cray and produced one of the biggest selling blues albums of all time, 1986's 'Strong Persuader'.

Since that time, HighTone has been instrumental in developing the careers of such artists as Dave Alvin, Tom Russell, Buddy Miller, Julie Miller, Dale Watson, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys, The Hot Club of Cowtown, and Heather Myles.

HighTone produced the first and longest running number one album on the Americana Chart - 'Tulare Dust: A Songwriters' Tribute to Merle Haggard' (HCD8058), which included Tom Russell, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Joe Shaver, Dave Alvin, Marshall Crenshaw, John Doe and others doing their interpretations of Haggard classics.

The label has also played a role in rejuvenating the careers of surf guitar legend Dick Dale, the original roots rock band The Blasters, '60s songwriting mystery man PF Sloan, and Dylan influence Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

HighTone's influence on the development and cross-pollination of traditionally-influenced music over the last three decades has been very significant, particularly in fusing roots rock, blues, country and folk into new directions.
