ERIC DOLPHY / OUTWARD BOUND
This CD contains Eric Dolphy's complete original LP Outward Bound (Prestige/New Jazz 8236). It marks his first album as a leader, and features him in a quintet format with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. It was also the first of various collaborations between Dolphy and Hubbard. The only two alternate takes from the session, as well as an extended reading of the bluesy "R&R" recorded that same year (and on which he shares center stage with Roy Eldridge and Charles Mingus) have been added as a bonus.
ERIC DOLPHY - alto sax, bass clarinet & flute; FREDDIE HUBBARD, trumpet;
JAKI BYARD, piano; GEORGE TUCKER, bass; ROY HAYNES, drums
Recorded Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, April 1, 1960. Original session recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
"Sometimes sounding as if it is boiling with rage, Dolphy's music is filled with sharp, jagged lines that lift the listener as they spiral to peak after peak of raw emotional expression. This album is life". DON DeMICHEAL - ALLMUSIC
"This very likable set was Eric Dolphy's first as a leader. A perfect introduction to Eric Dolphy's versatile talents, this boppish set is more accessible than many of Dolphy's more innovative recordings. Recommended." (Scott Yanow)
