Description
With Part & Songs, pianist, composer and artistic director Roberto Negro builds a singular form around the music of Arvo Part. He performs several of the Estonian composer's early piano works, the two Sonatinas and the Partita, alongside Fur Alina, and turns them into raw material for new compositions, songs and improvisations. Short motifs taken directly from these pieces are transformed, travel through the record and reappear in other guises, creating a continuity between Part's world and Negro's own.
The music is answered by poems by women writers, from Alejandra Pizarnik to Jin Eun-young, Mariangela Gualtieri, Laura Liberale and Emma Romeo, sung in French and Italian. Piano, voice, writing and improvisation are no longer separate territories but different expressions of one movement. Part & Songs is less a reinterpretation of Part than a way of letting his music pass through another sensibility and give rise to a new language.
Roberto Negro was born in Turin in 1981 and grew up in Kinshasa, where he began playing the piano at the age of five. Based in France since 1995, he studied at the Chambery conservatoire and then in Paris, developing an approach to composition built on the crossing of forms and disciplines.
A co-founder of the Tricollectif in 2011, he has worked with musicians, singers, theatre artists and large ensembles: the trio Dadada with Emile Parisien and Michele Rabbia, Les Metanuits with Parisien, and Newborn, created with the Ensemble intercontemporain. His albums have been recognised by the Academie Charles Cros and the Victoires du Jazz. He is currently writing new works for the Orchestre de Picardie (2027-2028) and for the Lemanic Modern Ensemble, around Duke Ellington, and leads Ensemble Godot, a sixteen-piece group devoted to composition and sound experimentation.
