Description
Making his Losen Records debut, Norwegian saxophonist and composer Oyvind Gravdal presents Dialogic, a collection of beautiful compositions that are both melancholic and uplifting. Built around a core trio with pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and drummer Anders Engen, the music was performed spontaneously without any preconception on where it might go - an intuitive dialog between three musicians completely at one with each other's inventions.
Dialogic was created as a soundtrack to a film about Oyvind Gravdal's brother Ole (aka Marto) who suffered a severe brain injury during a deep-water dive. Oyvind explains: "We had Marto in the studio during the recording session, with the film crew present as well; in a way, we "jammed" his personality - much like how people in Northern Norway sing traditional songs about specific individuals. Before the accident, Marto was an exceptionally outgoing, sociable, and talkative young man - the life of the party - only to lose absolutely everything later. On the day of the recording, Marto sat wide-eyed and alert, listening for the entire four hours we played for him. That was highly unusual for him. You can hear his breathing throughout the album. It seemed he truly appreciated what we were playing. It was a very special and powerful day for all of us in the studio."
