Description
Nirgendland (Nessunluogo) is a powerful new album by Etta Scollo that transforms poetry into song and memory into music. Released in January 2025 on Jazzhaus Records, the album sets the words of legendary poet Mascha Kaleko to music in honor of the 50th anniversary of her death--creating a deeply emotional listening experience that speaks directly to our time.
At its heart, Nirgendland (Nessunluogo) explores themes of home, exile, identity, and belonging. Kaleko's life was marked by displacement: forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1938, she wrote with piercing clarity about loss and longing. Scollo--an artist who has long lived between cultures, now based between Sicily and Berlin--finds a profound personal resonance in Kaleko's verses. The project is anchored by the line "Zur Heimat erkor ich mir die Liebe" ("I chose love as my homeland"), which becomes the emotional compass of the album.
The title track "Nirgendland", performed a cappella, is the album's core: a haunting meditation on exile and disorientation that also echoes today's political and social fractures. Throughout the record, Scollo weaves jazz, chanson, and intimate vocal pieces into finely crafted musical scenes that allow Kaleko's words to breathe, ache, and endure.
Featuring an outstanding ensemble--including Tara Bouman (clarinet), Susanne Paul (cello), Dota Kehr, Els Vandeweyer (vibraphone), and guest appearances by Eva Mattes and Maddalena Crippa--the album is shaped by collaboration, warmth, and artistic depth.
Nirgendland (Nessunluogo) is more than a tribute. It is a moving musical home for timeless poetry--and one of the most personal and resonant works of Etta Scollo's career.
