Description
Following the positive response to the limited vinyl edition of Into the Light, sound artist Martin Kalberer's new album is now being released in an expanded version on CD. Instrumental pieces that rely on improvisation and skill transport listeners into multifaceted, haunting soundscapes.
Into the Light showcases the Munich-based composer and multi-instrumentalist in a focused and open approach that trusts the musical moment and gives the sounds space to unfold freely. Ideas are intuitively picked up, developed, and gently modified. Using Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizers, sequencers, and loop stations, Kalberer develops long musical arcs of tension that exhibit an idiosyncratic dynamic. The music does not follow classical song structures, but rather inner movements and repetitions, creating an intense, lively atmosphere. In an age characterized by fast-paced living, the pieces seem like an invitation to pause and consciously perceive the subtle changes in sound and rhythm. Kalberer focuses on depth. He is not guided by external specifications, but by the music itself.
The starting point for the album was the international "Piano Day 2025," on which Kalberer presented new material live. Essential parts of into the light were created in this context. The recording shows how improvisation and technical skill intertwine to create surprising moments again and again.
The limited vinyl edition contained only two pieces, recorded as direct cuts--small excerpts from a project still in development. The CD version expands the original album with additional pieces and adds further facets to the already familiar material. The title track, into the light, continues to form the core of the content. Elektra refers to the "Elektra Tonquartier" in Munich's BERGSON art power plant, a concert hall where the piece was first performed in 2024 and whose spatial characteristics have been incorporated into the musical design.
While the vinyl edition was conceived as a limited release, the CD is intended as a continuation of the project. It makes into the light accessible in an expanded form, independent of the original release framework.
