Description
Trance-inducing Voodoo music from Sudanese mystic healing ceremonies performed by the Cairo-based Rango collective making their debut at the Barbican’s Transcender Festival on 30 September.
Debut EP by extraordinary Sudanese-Egyptian master musicians RANGO, Mystic healing music, mysterious Zar/Voodoo rites and dance music from traditional Sudanese Wedding celebrations; all performed on lyres retrofitted with electric pickups and vintage Rango Marimbas with gourd spirit resonators, accompanied by dancers wearing percussion belts fashioned from goat horns & brandishing recycled aerosol can shakers.
Live in the UK during Black History month October 2009, Rango perform a unique form of sacred and secular music which evolved from the former slave communities of Sudan and Ethiopia following the abolition of the slave trade in Egypt. Combining traditional music styles with a complex belief system of Sudanese shamanic practices and Zar, a healing communion with unseen entities thought to cleanse the soul and relieve suffering, along worship of Muslim prophets and Christian spirits, the band’s exotic music and principle instrument is known as Rango.
