Description
For most of us the word Amsterdam will conjure up images of the beautiful 18th century city centre with its canals, bicycles, tulips, wooden shoes and, if you want to take a walk on the wild side, coffee shops and the red light disctrict. However, take the metro from Central Station, travel in south-eastern direction and stop off at the Amsterdam-Bijlmer Arena. The escalator will take you down to a booming district with 130 nationalities living there.
Because of its socio-demographic constitution, the Amsterdam-Bijlmer has become the gospel centre of the Netherlands. With its 80 church communities, the quantity and diversity of religions in the Bijlmer form the perfect breeding ground for black gospel music, which is strongly bound to the ethnical and cultural roots of the Bijlmer's inhabitants. Whatever their backgrounds, the music is shared by young and old, strongly embedded in their African heritage of faith. This documentary is like a journey around the world, within the boundaries of the Amsterdam Bijlmer.
