Description
Thurgoland is a new 6-song CD EP by long-standing Leeds’ band The Sinister Cleaners.
In the 1980s BBC Radio 1’s John Peel was a Sinister Cleaners’ fan, playing all their 12” singles - and so was Janice Long, who invited them to the BBC for tea. Deals were discussed in London record company offices, tours were undertaken around the UK and Europe but the group weren’t really interested in the corporate game.
Born into Margaret Thatcher’s Yorkshire during a time of mass unemployment and the miners’ strike, The Cleaners had three songwriters and took their influences from the whole rock’n’roll canon referencing Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, British psychedelia and punk while disconnected 1980’s TV pop stars ignored politics and made sure their eyeliner looked OK.
Since then they’ve kept in touch. Someone said they’d always wanted to record at the famous Cargo studios in Rochdale, where Joy Division and The Fall recorded back in the day. Then someone said how great live recording was, and within weeks they were in the Cargo building insisting that they record live in the cellar and not in the studio (now ‘Voltalab’) upstairs. The result is the Thurgoland EP.
All have been involved in other projects: Simon with The Wedding Present, Beachbuggy, Cha Cha Cohen and RRRapid-Kool, Len with The Ukrainians, Wedding Present and as The Legendary Len Liggins, Andrew with Colenso Parade and The Tripping Cherubs and John with Whole Sky Monitor, The Chorus, Fuzzbird, Greenhouse, the Sunny Smiles Three, Electric Flea Show and solo.
