Stevie Ray Vaughan, live from the Bumbershoot Arts Festival, Seattle Coliseum, WA, 1st September 1985. "In the 1980s, Stevie Ray Vaughan was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasised his influence in blues and American rock & roll." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com
Stevie Ray Vaughan's performance on the evening of 1st September, 1985 at the Bumbershoot Arts Festival was broadcast by KUOW-FM and features 9 of the 10 tracks from his forthcoming Soul to Soul album. Despite mixed reviews, the album peaked at #34 and remained on Billboard 200 until the summer of the following year and was eventually certified gold.
SRV had just came out of rehab after a near fatal experience and these live versions certainly take on a new edge with an intensity and power that that wasn't present on Soul to Soul. Together with rarities and cover versions, as well as guest appearances from Bonnie Raitt on Texas Flood and Testify.
A troubled soul and blues guitar guru died aged just 35 but his legacy remains in his music. Or as he put it "Music really is a way to reach out and hold on to each other in a healthy way."
