If Bruckner's contemporaries are to be believed, the composer dedicated the Ninth to "dear God". There are no more concrete references made to the religious realm in the Ninth Symphony than are made in his earlier symphonies. And yet there is no mistaking the metaphysical expression of the work. It is only necessary to think of the supernatural main theme of the opening movement. Max Auer, one of the early Bruckner biographers, felt that the Scherzo of the Ninth appeared like the hallucinations of someone who is doomed to die.
