Description
"Obsession" is the fascinating theme of violinist Marie Nadeau-Tremblay's new album. She is joined by Melisande Corriveau (viola da gamba), Eric Milnes (harpsichord and organ), and Kerry Bursey (tenor and lute).
The works on this album share obsessive or compulsive characteristics: a theme and its variations (Louis-Robert Guillemain's "La Furstemberg", La Folia, Une jeune fillette); a repeated basso continuo line (pieces by Dietrich Buxtehude and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber), or a haunting rondo theme that returns constantly (Francois Francoeur).
Reflecting on the dark character of most of the pieces chosen, Marie Nadeau-Tremblay says:
"There is something about the homogeneity of an album consisting entirely of minor key pieces that strongly titillated me, especially when the album is all about obsession, about being stuck in a loop. I wanted it to have a kind of trance-inducing power."
Named Radio-Canada Classical Revelation 2021-2022 and winner of the Opus Award for Discovery of the Year in 2022, Marie Nadeau-Tremblay is also the recipient of the Choquette Symcox Award from Jeunesses Musicales Canada. She plays a Thomas Perry violin (1750) as well as an Amati violin made by Timothy Johnson, and generously loaned to her by Mr. Jacques Marchand.
