  • Description

25 Years Ago. The dawn of the new millennium marked the definitive end of a long-standing misconception: for decades, it was believed that music could only be truly felt if it was handmade. Far from it! The world had not yet fully absorbed the psychedelic-electronica blueprint of Madonna's Ray of Light in the year 2000 when a promotional-only EP struck like a comet. The black-white-cream-colored inlay boldly proclaimed: "This 4 Track CD Presents A New Band With A New Sound: HATTLER". 30 years earlier in Ulm. Hellmut Hattler, bassist and composer par excellence, had already mapped out rhythmic and melodic foundations with the krautrock band Kraan, often under the legendary production of Conny Plank. When Kraan took a temporary hiatus, Hellmut Hattler joined forces with Joo Kraus to form the hip-jazz duo Tab Two. The first glimpses of the HATTLER project appeared during the production of Tab Two's final studio album Between Us. The vision behind it? To fuse the experience gained from the purely band-driven approach of Kraan with the electronic aesthetics of Tab Two, creating a brand-new synthesis. HATTLER brings together people who, at first glance, have little in common-pop lovers, funk devotees, and jazz explorers alike. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY is far more than just a "Best Of" compilation. The title track, All Rite, Swipe, and the reimagined Kraan classic Rainy May are brand-new additions. In many ways the album can be seen as Hellmut Hattler's personal director's cut of his musical universe.
