Description
A cursory glance at the contents of this recital reveals what seems to be an extremely heterogeneous programme: eight works that span the entire 20th century by composers of five different nationalities, women as well as men. However, a spirit of free-thinking permeates the entire CD. All the composers represented here are what Edith Van Dyck and Richard Shaw term "free spirits": men and women who chose their own paths with great authenticity, in defiance of prevailing aesthetic dictates and the lurking eye of censorship. These paths often led them towards Nature, which for them was a source of inspiration and spiritual nourishment; for each of them it was expressed in music with a strong sense of pared-down lyricism and an organic sound world. Edith Van Dyck is a renowned orchestral flautist, soloist and teacher. She is solo flautist with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Tilburg (NL). Richard Shaw enjoys giving concerts and broadcasting with a wide range of instrumentalists and singers. His many broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 include duo performances with violinists such as James Ehnes, Viviane Hagner and Leonidas Kavakos.
