Description
Texas-born Barbara Lynn has been recording intermittently since 1961 and although she's never had a UK hit she does have a substantial following in this country. Remarkably, this is with both 'southern soul' and 'northern soul' fans. In the former respect she has been championed by well known writer/broadcaster Charlie Gillett; in the latter respect only three and a half years ago she headlined a jam-packed soul weekender in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Also, as one of the few guitar-playing female soul singer/songwriters, she is well respected by the blues fraternity. This brand new album on the Austin, Texas-based Dialtone label has been deliberately produced with a 'retro' feel, the live-in-studio musicians simulating the sound and style of Barbara's popular '60s and early '70s recordings. The material is an enticing mix of songs that appeal to the southern (e.g. Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham's "He Ain't Gonna Do Right") and northern soul fans (her own "Movin' On A Groove")
with two or three bluesy items such as Slim Harpo's "Got Love If You Want It".
