Description
In drama as well as in musical theatre, the monologue is often used to express and visualise the smallest nuances of emotions - even those that cannot or should not be expressed.
In this recording, the mezzo-soprano Anna Bonitatibus and her piano accompanist Adele D'Aronzo devote themselves to this very interesting aspect of opera and song culture.
On the basis of selected works by Donizetti, Respighi, Rossini, Zingarelli, Viardot and Wagner, the diverse narrative and expressive approaches of the monologue are exemplified.
"Bonitatibus's interpretations go to the heart of these extraordinary pieces. Collaborative pianist Adele D'Aronzo, meanwhile, presents some demanding accompaniments to impressive effect , while as a soloist she makes something special out of Mel Bonis's brilliantly effective dance for piano, Salomé." – BBC Music Magazine *****
"Monologues was a something of a revelation for me this year […] primarily for the fabulous performance of mezzo-soprano Anna Bonitatibus. The recital, superbly accompanied by Adele D'Aronzo, of dramatic scenes for piano and voice by Donizetti, Wagner & Respighi amongst others should be investigated by any lover of opera or art song, as it features some of the most intelligent and characterful singing I've heard this year, or in fact any year." – Presto Music
"Throughout the program, she is an excellent interpreter, vocally impressive and immensely 'human' in her portrayal. Adele d'Aronzo supports the singer very well on the piano." - Pizzicato.lu
"[This is] an outstanding recording, in which Bonitatibus displays something like the full variety of her voice, a variety governed by a strong sense of the appropriate style for each piece. […] I have found this recording of Aretusa [Respighi] little short of revelatory." – MusicWeb International
