Description
Ukrainian folk music collides with British punk pop! The Ukrainians release their first studio album of all-new material since the early 1990s!
The Ukrainians mix traditional Ukrainian folk music with British punk pop. The result according to the NME "blows your trousers off"! And now, after a long absence, they return at full power with this new album. 'Diaspora' is about migration - the heartbreak of leaving family and homeland coupled with the excitement of starting a new life.
The songs, mostly their own new compositions, have a strong resonance at a time when tens of thousands of young Ukrainians, Poles and other eastern Europeans have been flocking to the West. As well as being specifically Ukrainian though, the band's music has an undeniable universal quality - and genuine cross-genre appeal.
To illustrate the point, The Ukrainians have taken T Rex's 'Children of the Revolution' and transformed it into a magnum opus with choir and strings that pays tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people at the time of the Orange Revolution.
The band has also re-crafted Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 and made it into a great single bursting with folk energy!
The genius of The Ukrainians, of course lies in the fact that all of these strands pull together to make a surprisingly coherent and stunning album.
