Description
The High Span provide a strange and special blend of DIY post-pop jangle and edgier experimental sounds, of lyric-driven guitar-indie and a bit of English awkwardness. Based in Rochester, Kent, the quartet formed around the songwriting of Kevin Younger (Subway Sect, Ye Ascoyne d'Ascoynes, Baby Birkin, The Speed of Sound and others), with fellow Medway music veteran Mark Aitken (of Ye Ascoyne d'Ascoynes, The Men From Memphis, Bob Collins & The Full Nelson, These Guilty Men and others) and expat Nova Scotian James Moore (of Pod, One Free Fall and revered Canadian alt-rockers Rusty), joined by backing vocalist Sarah Post. The High Span unleashed their Quirky Miniboss Squad EP in August of 2020 (yeah, that year), and managed to grab attention from press and public alike, selected as one of Record Collector's singles of the year, as did their debut, self-titled album in 2023. This new album allows The High Span to continue their edgier experimental sounds. The songs range lyrically from lost-love trauma (Phantom Limb) and weird recurring dreams (Ambrosine), to the anarchist scares of late 19th-century Paris (Superintendent Baeker). The band covering the Velvet Monkeys' 1981 US psych-punk stormer 'Everything Is Right' also seems very much right. Are you blithering?
