Critically acclaimed, Gil Evans' 1961 album Out of the Cool is widely regarded as his finest work as a leader in his own right, apart from his collaborations with Miles Davis ('Birth ofThe Cool', 'Sketches of Spain', 'Porgy & Bess' Miles Ahead') and is considered a masterpiece of modern jazz orchestration, ranking among the best postwar jazz recordings.
Gil Evans began recording his own albums during 1958-59 thanks to the success of his first collaboration with Miles Davis, Miles Ahead, in 1957. Out of the Cool was recorded a short time after Evans completed a six-week engagement at the Jazz Gallery club in New York City; the personnel was largely the same he had used there (including such stars as Jimmy Knepper, Budd Johnson, Johnny Coles and Ron Carter), with the addition of Elvin Jones.
