Description
Anton Bruckner, Ninth Symphony in D minor, four movements including finale based on original sources, supplemented, completed and premiered by Gerd Schaller .'And it is at that very point that Gerd Schaller embarks upon his completion of the finale by comparing all available drafts back to the very earliest sketches, in order as far as possible to close the existing gaps in the score on the basis of original manuscript documents by the work’s composer. He also supplements, completes and orchestrates missing parts of the score not only on the basis of his many years of professional experience as a conductor but also because his recording of the complete cycle of all eleven symphonies (often in unfamiliar versions including William Carragan’s completion of the Ninth) has shown him how to integrate Bruckner’s compositional techniques and stylistic elements into his reconstructive approach, so that even passages lacking a coherent original version are presented in a distinctively Brucknerian style while additions are not perceived as alien features, resulting in a truly performable version of the final movement of the Ninth. And that is of great importance for its future in the concert hall, as the symphony now exists in a convincing new four-movement form that possesses a high degree of authenticity.' - Dr. Rainer Boss
