Description
Judith and Dave O'Higgins return with their third album, Liquorice Allsorts, a vibrant, swinging recording guided by an intuitive rapport and years of shared playing. Performing as His 'n' Hers, the couple draw on the tradition of classic "tough tenor" collaborations, where contrast is as vital as cohesion. As Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis once put it, "what we are doing is presenting, side by side, two different styles of playing tenor, a contrast, not a contest".
They are joined by their long-standing rhythm section, Graham Harvey (piano), Jeremy Brown (double bass) and Josh Morrison (drums), whose drive is central to the album's sound.
The title track, 'Liquorice Allsorts', is a joint composition that sets the tone, combining three new originals, including 'Reptile Dysfunction' and 'Fittem', with a selection of tunes by favourite composers Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, George Coleman and Lee Morgan.
The album also draws inspiration from an unexpected source: an original artwork by Pigcasso, the celebrated rescued pig and the first non-human artist to hold a solo exhibition. Owners of the painting 'Liquorice Allsorts', the O'Higgins dedicate the album to Pigcasso's story, a celebration of creativity in unlikely places.
His 'n' Hers' Liquorice Allsorts balances relaxed grooves with hard-swinging energy - direct, unforced and distinctly their own.
