  • Description

London-based saxophonist and composer Mali Sheard presents Hayfever, a debut album of original contemporary jazz exploring identity, family and the natural world. Inspired by the Hertfordshire countryside where she grew up and the Yorkshire Dales, the album reflects the landscapes and experiences that have shaped her musical voice.

Recorded with a quintet of musicians she has performed alongside through Tomorrow's Warriors and the Royal Academy of Music, Hayfever features Sheard on alto and soprano saxophones with Keira Chakraborty (flute), Kyle Osborne (piano), George Balmont (bass) and Luke McCarthy (drums). Guitarist Rob Luft and pianist Huw Warren make guest appearances.

Each composition tells its own story. Opening track 'When The Sun' is a tribute to Mali Sheard's Kenyan-Indian grandmother, whose warmth and optimism inspired the piece. Featuring birdsong recorded near her childhood home, it establishes the album's connection to place. The title track captures the energy of a summer thunderstorm, while 'Elephants' reflects on Sheard's Kenyan heritage and the experience of seeing elephants in the wild. 'Afternoon Tea With A Demon' reflects on the pain of betrayal, before the album closes with 'Breathe', a dedication to her Yorkshire grandmother and a quiet meditation on change and moving forward.

"Hayfever is about the things that shape us," says Sheard. "Nature has always been a place where I find peace, perspective and creativity. The music also reflects the people closest to me and the experiences that have helped me grow."
