Description
Bach's motets are monoliths of the Baroque and place great artistic and technical demands on their interpreters: so they are in good hands with the Solomon's Knot ensemble under Jonathan Sells. The recording contains all the motets of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), placed here in the context of the music of the previous generation of the Bach dynasty that shaped him.
"This is the first of a series of location-specific Solomon's Knot recording projects. We chose Arnstadt's inspirational Bachkirche for these works, not only for its wonderful acoustic, but also as a place which connects the two Bachs: Johann Christoph was born in Arnstadt, and Johann Sebastian's first job as an organist was at the church, which came to be named after him."
- Solomon's Knot
"the vocal declamation is full of character and the continuo support where called for of Jan Zahourek (violone) and Pawl Siwczak is stylish" – BBC Music Magazine (4 STARS)
"Although each motet has its own distinct character, the cumulative effect has been to create a glorious epitome of Baroque choral polyphony […]. Magical! Solomon's Knot are to be congratulated on their refreshing advocacy. A highly rewarding venture." – Gramophone
