Description
With Bach's Horns, Solomon's Knot presents a boldly conceived album linking three of Bach's works through the shared presence of the horn--a symbol of festivity, nature, and nobility. Central is the "Hunt Cantata" BWV 208, framed by the festive Mass in F major BWV 233 and the First Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046, whose first movement serves as a jubilant overture, with other movements woven into the cantata.
Gramophone Magazine says of this recording: "Anneke Scott and Anna Drysdale's natural horns resound splendidly with visceral disruption, high-wire flamboyance or regal dignity (and sometimes all those elements at once)."
The ensemble's historically informed performance highlights Bach's horn writing with stylistic assurance and vibrant expressiveness.
The Hunt Cantata, composed in 1713 for a duke's birthday, reveals courtly theatricality and pastoral charm, while the Mass offers a spiritual, contrapuntal counterpart featuring prominent horns.
Under Jonathan Sells, Solomon's Knot blends historical insight with lively, conductor-less music-making, honouring Bach's ceremonial style and exploring the horn's symbolic grandeur and inventiveness.
"One huge advantage Solomon's Knot have in this type of music is the unrelenting beauty of their individual voices....." Gramophone on 'Lost Majesty' PROSP0086
