  • Description

Good music is good music no matter what, but a little extra girl power never hurts. In observance of the story of Ethel Smyth and the critic who praised Smyth for 'composing like a man', tenThing knew that this had to be the title of their new album, released on the LAWO Classics label. It's both wonderfully provocative and something to bring a wry smile to the face. From Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn to Florence Price and Ethel Smyth, this programme celebrates the work of female composers from around the world in world premiere transcriptions for the brass ensemble.

Tine says "When I was growing up, it was entirely normal for girls to play both trombone and tuba, and for me playing trumpet felt like the most natural thing in the world. However, in the professional music world this was not necessarily the case. In many countries, there is still a long way to go in terms of gender equality in the brass world. It feels incredibly good to play with the other musicians in tenThing. We trust each other. Without a doubt, trust and security are some of the things I value most when making music with others, and this applies to life in general. She composes like a man is a project that means a lot to me. It means a lot to us."

Formed in 2007 by critically acclaimed Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth as a fun and exciting collaboration between musical friends, the ten-piece, all-female brass ensemble tenThing have firmly established themselves on the international scene to great acclaim. tenThing are celebrated for their commitment to outreach and access to music through diverse repertoire. The group work closely with Norwegian guitarist and arranger Jarle Storlokken in the arrangement of scores for the ensemble.

"Top playing and plenty to discover" – The Guardian

"Trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth is making a point about equality with her brilliant new album, She Composes Like a Man, packed with music written by women" – Apple Music Classical

"a new album celebrating 'girl power' […] played with real spirit." – BBC Radio 3, Record Review (Andrew McGregor)

"Beautiful ensemble playing and a warm, nuanced sonority. Sublime!" – Stretto

"The success of this album, and indeed it is a success, is not a gender thing. It is a matter of great music being performed by a superb ensemble." - Positive Feedback

"Two words: astounding virtuosity." "the brass playing is simply phenomenal. Helseth is an amazing talent. And she is able to pull together a similarly impressive group of fellow brass magicians." - Positive Feedback

"the repertoire is often tremendous fun, balancing lyricism and drama, humour, dance, the old (early romantic) and the new, as well as the 'serious' and 'folk'. The sequencing is skilful as the carefully voiced performances. […] there is much to enjoy." – *****

"The ensemble's virtuoso playing is impressive – brass enthusiasts will love it" – Midlands Music Reviews ****

"TenThing is now a renowned group with a beautiful warm sound, which comes into its own in the stylistically quite diverse repertoire." – NRC ****

"There's not a dud track here. It's difficult not to grin on hearing Grazyna Bacewicz's high-octane "Mazovian Dance", here featuring some spectacular tonguing on low brass, and the oddly-named "Rissolty Rossolty" by Ruth Crawford Seeger builds to an exuberant, clangourous climax, sounding here more like 30 players than ten. […] Entertaining and educational in equal measure: this is a terrific disc." – The Arts Desk

"this album from Tine Thing Helseth's all-female brass ensemble blazes a trail...And how joyfully it blazes too, in this colourful program of short works by women, arranged by Jarle Storlokken and (in one instance) Sebastian Haukas, and played with a gorgeous blend and sense of enjoyment throughout" – Limelight
