Founded in 2006 by pianist and artistic director Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, the DSCH--Shostakovich Ensemble has been regarded over the past two decades as one of the leading chamber music groups on the international scene. Performing on piano for this recording, Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished Portuguese artists of recent decades, internationally recognised as a soloist, chamber musician and artistic director. Franz Schubert's earliest well-known instrumental piece is also one of the most celebrated piano quintets ever written. The Piano Quintet in A major--commonly known as 'The Trout'--is unusual in respect of its scoring, its material and its atmosphere. Each of those features speaks of Schubert's distinction as a composer while adumbrating the techniques and principles that made his musical output unlike anyone else's. When Antonin Dvorak wrote the first of his piano quartets in 1875, he was more than a decade older than Schubert had been at the time of the Trout Quintet. Yet in a sense, the two works come from similar stages in their creator's journeys as composers. As in Schubert's Trout, the exploration of a new instrumental configuration apparently drew Dvorak into new levels of ambition and fluency but he wasn't quite ready to abandon tradition. The D major piano quartet was the last in which he used a formal sonata form across all three movements, the third forming a hybrid of scherzo and finale.
