  • Description

Danish vocalist and composer Emma Pilgaard returns with her third album of original music, an ambitious song cycle inspired by the lives of eight women from Danish history. Following the critically acclaimed releases of In My Garden (2024) and Waiting Game (2025), the record brings together an international ensemble of leading female jazz musicians to explore stories of creativity, resilience and determination through Pilgaard's distinctive blend of lyrical songwriting and contemporary jazz. Inspired by Kvinde kend din historie (Woman Know Your History) by Danish author Gry Jexen, Pilgaard was moved to revisit the lives of women whose achievements have shaped Danish history. Rather than documenting their stories directly, she reimagines them through original compositions reflecting on their courage, struggles and lasting influence. The album honours figures including painter Anna Ancher, electronic music pioneer Else Marie Pade, geophysicist Inge Lehmann, women's rights campaigner Thit Jensen, silent film stunt performer Emilie Sannom and sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, while also giving voice to the lesser-known story of Carla Hansine Petersen, whose life reflects the women subjected to Denmark's twentieth-century eugenics policies. Musically, A Woman's Voice moves between intimate ballads and rhythmically adventurous contemporary jazz, combining lyrical storytelling with shifting time signatures, melodic bass lines and emotionally driven melodies. Pilgaard also weaves subtle musical references into the compositions, from shimmering vibraphone textures inspired by Else Marie Pade's electronic works to the improvised opening of Mistress of the Air, evoking Emilie Sannom's aerial performances. Tracklisting>> 1.Glowing in the Light of a Sunbeam (4:57) 2.Hidden Melodies (4:42) 3.My Mother (5:42) 4.A Woman's Voice (4:45) 5.Interlude (1:15) 6.Mistress of the Air (4:53) 7.Through (3:24) 8.Above Expectations (5:42) 9.We Can Be Lonely (4:25) Emma Pilgaard - Vocals Rahel Talts - Piano (except on 5) Hilda Nordkvist - Double Bass (except on 5) Patrycja Wybranczyk - Drums Viktoria Sondergaard - Vibraphone (on 2, 5, 6) Ida Brinch - Trumpet (on 2, 4)
