  • Description

Remastered reissue of saxophonist Steve Grossman's 1991 album on Red Records.

My Second Prime is the last piece that completes the cycle of albums that New York saxophonist Steve Grossman (1951 -2020) recorded for Red Records; the two previous ones being, Way Out East from 1984 and Love Is The Thing from 1985. The former featured bassist Juni Booth and drummer Joe Chambers, and the latter album, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist David Williams, and drummer Billy Higgins. The echo of these musicians can be heard in Grossman's torrential phrasing, even if, under the surface, the influence of Sonny Rollins was already starting to take over. The five years that separate the three recordings show how Grossman's music had in a certain sense become complete and enriched by his personal working of Rollins' language.

My Second Prime not only testifies to a Grossman in great shape, but it also captures the moment of his career relaunch and return to the circuit by signing an important recording contract with Dreyfus and recording with, among other, pianists McCoy Tyner and Barry Harris.

    Steve Grossman: tenor saxophone
    Fred Henke: piano
    Gilbert Rovere - bass
    Charles Bellonzi: drums
Recorded at La Spezia Jazz Festival, Italy, December 17, 1990.
Produced by Alberto Alberti and Sandro Berti-Ceroni.
