Bob Wallis & His Storyville Jazzmen
Description
A double CD for the price of one. Another CD recorded by Allan Gilmour at the Dancing Slipper Jazz Club in Nottingham. Bob Wallis was one of the leading Trad band-leaders of the 1960s.
The Storyville Jazzmen were in the second tier below the leading bands of Ball, Barber and Bilk. The band had some chart success in 1961 and 1962 with singles in the top 50.
Despite the band being highly accomplished Jazz musicians they were frowned upon by the Jazz fraternity because they adopted the 'uniform' of Mississippi gamblers and their recordings were often of lightweight material.
These recordings show what the band was capable of in relaxed mode, letting its hair down and enjoying itself in a club setting playing some quality Jazz. As always Allan Gilmour's recordings are of a very high standard.
The repertoire ranges from Trad Jazz standards to tunes associated with Johnny Hodges, Count Basie, Ben Webster and Duke Ellington. Careful 'voicing' of the instruments enable the band to sound bigger than it actually was.
