Description
Gordon Cutty - English Concertina; and - Tommy Williams - Maccann Duet concertina. The life & music of two masters of the concertina in England
The Free Reed Records label evolved from Neil Wayne's concertina enthusiasts' magazine 'Free Reed - The Concertina Newsletter'.
Since 1965, Neil had been collecting & studying ancient concertinas and the instrument's history, and interviewing and recording the old gentlemen who played, and in some cases manufactured these uniquely English instruments.
The two key "Masters Of The Concertina" whose music most influenced Wayne's move towards LP releases were Gordon Cutty and Tommy Williams; Gordon was a Co Durham miner, musician and teacher who'd led a dance band on his Wheatstone English system concertina in the 1930s & '40s, and Tommy was a Londoner who'd worked for the Lachenal Concertina factory in the 1920s, had played his huge Wheatstone Maccann duet system concertina in music hall and concert parties, and by the 1950s, had a small concertina repair workshop in a Battersea garret.
They both attended the 'Concertina Conventions' that Free Reed Magazine ran between 1969 and 1973, and their music and reminiscences were recorded by Neil, and were immortalised on these vital LPs as part of the eight-LP debut of the Free Reed record label.
