Description
Bob Dylan and the Band, live from Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 31st January 1974.
The Bob Dylan and the Band 1974 Tour - sometimes referred to as Tour '74 - was a two-month concert tour staged in arenas early that year. It was Bob Dylan's first tour in eight years, performing with his old partners the Band. They performed within a basic two set format, each set presented The Band performing both with and without Dylan. Dylan began each second set solo acoustic, something he hadn't attempted in quite some time. Revealing that he was quite aware of audience expectations, he chose to perform a variety of his most revered songs, including quite a few from the 1966 tour setlist, while avoiding recent material from Self Portrait and New Morning. With the notable exception of Forever Young, Dylan largely avoided material from Planet Waves.
This was a high-profile comeback for both acts and the tour generally got a positive reception. American music journalist Robert Christgau referred to the tour arrangements as both crazy and strong and wrote that "But while the Band sounds undisciplined, threatening to destroy their headlong momentum by throwing out one foot or elbow too many, they never abandon their enormous technical ability... Dylan's voice settles in at a rich bellow, running over more than one of his old songs like a truck. Such a sacrilege. Uncle Bob purveying to the sports arena masses. We may never even be sure that this is a masterpiece."
The performance captured here highlights the unwavering partnership of Bob Dylan and the Band, live from Madison Square Garden, New York 31st January 1974 for broadcast on WNEW-FM radio.
