  • Description

Debut album from fantastic septet Quadraceratops, led by saxophonist and composer Cath Roberts. Her varied musical influences include Steve Coleman, John Zorn and J Dilla; other inspiration comes from fictional serial killers, flying insects and her tortoiseshell cat...

Cath Roberts is a brilliant composer and improvising baritone/alto saxophonist from Northamptonshire, now based in London. She leads the septet Quadraceratops, who make their recording debut here on the Manchester based Efpi label, performing her own compositions. Championed by Jez Nelson of Jazz on 3 amongst others, the band features Cath on alto saxophone alongside Tom Ward on tenor saxophone, Henry Spencer on trumpet, Magnus Dearness on trombone, bassist Jason Simpson, drummer Olly Blackman and keyboardist Dave O'Brien, whose brilliant band Porpoise Corpus were an early inspiration.

Other influences on Cath's distinctive compositions include Steve Coleman, John Zorn, Reid Anderson and Jim Black as well as hip-hop artists such as J Dilla, Madlib and MF Doom. Cath is an increasingly important member of London's vibrant jazz and improvised music scene, playing in a number of other projects as well as being an influential curator/promoter, and this marvellous debut recording will surely establish her further as a major new voice in British jazz.

Personnel: Cath Roberts (alto saxophone), Tom Ward (tenor saxophone), Henry Spencer (trumpet), Magnus Dearness (trombone), Dave O'Brien (Fender Rhodes, piano), Jason Simpson (double bass), Olly Blackman (drums)
