Description
Prior to 'Independence', Lulu hadn't recorded an album since 1982; her instantly recognisable vocals largely unheard for a decade! With 'Independence', Lulu returned as a UK charts contender, re-orientated towards a soul / R&B vibe, with heaps of club remixes.
She recorded with Barry Gibb ('LET ME WAKE UP IN YOUR ARMS'), with R&B producer Nick Martinelli ('HOW 'BOUT US') whose credits included Loose Ends, Regina Belle and Phyllis Hyman. Lulu's own songwriting contributions included 'I'M WALKING AWAY', 'EVERY WOMAN KNOWS' and 'GOODBYE BABY AND AMEN'. 'I'M BACK FOR MORE' is a duet with Bobby Womack, and young UK soul producer Ian Green collaborated on 'THERE HAS GOT TO BE A WAY' and 'UNTIL I GET OVER YOU'; he'd been responsible for several Monie Love hits. Winston Sela, the co-writer of the sassy title track 'INDEPENDENCE' had previously penned Maxi Priest's No. 1 hit 'CLOSE TO YOU'. The 'Independence' album's repertoire was an exemplary cross-genre hybrid.
Lulu's R&B passion blended seamlessly with deft pop melodies on 'HOW 'BOUT US' (originally a Top 10 hit for Champaign); the Simon Climie and Rob Fisher composition 'UNTIL I GET OVER YOU' and, of course, on the Gibb brothers composition 'LET ME WAKE UP IN YOUR ARMS', which boasts additional dance remixes by the legendary Frankie Knuckles.
