For more than twenty-five years, Clocked Out - the acclaimed duo of Erik Griswold (prepared piano) and Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion) - have carved out a singular place in Australian experimental music. Out of Time, is a mesmerising exploration of rhythm, ecology and our changing relationship with time itself. Using a carefully tuned collection of prepared piano, resonant percussion, found objects and micro-tuned instruments, the duo create a vivid world of mind-bending polyrhythms, shimmering overtones, warped grooves and kaleidoscopic sonic colour. Both playful and profound, Out of Time asks listeners to experience time not as something fixed, but as something lived, stretched, repeated and transformed.
Since launching Clocked Out in Melbourne in 2000 after first meeting at the University of California, San Diego, Griswold and Tomlinson have become internationally recognised pioneers of experimental music. Their work spans original compositions, site-specific performances, intercultural collaborations, festivals and large-scale artistic projects exploring the intersections of music, ecology, architecture and science. Recipients of two APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards-including the Award for Excellence in Experimental Music and Outstanding Contribution by an Organisation-as well as two Green Room Awards, they have performed everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Roulette (New York) and SuperDeluxe (Tokyo). Their recent collaboration with the Australian Art Orchestra, Water Pushes Sand, received an ARIA Award nomination, while their long-running residencies at Queensland Conservatorium and the Piano Mill have helped shape Australia's experimental music landscape.
With Out of Time, Clocked Out continue their remarkable journey, creating music that invites listeners to slow down, listen deeply, and discover new ways of hearing the rhythms that connect us to each other and the world around us.
