When Gioachino Rossini is mentioned, the mind immediately turns to the inexhaustible melodic brilliance of his operas--Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola or Guillaume Tell. Far less familiar, however, is the remarkable body of vocal and piano miniatures that accompanied the composer throughout his life. These occasional works, known collectively as the Fogli d'album ("Album Leaves"), form the heart of Anna Bonitatibus' new recording, 'Fogli d'album - Rossini Rarities'. What at first glance appears to be a collection of charming miniatures soon reveals itself as a deeply personal musical diary. Rossini wrote these pieces not for theatres or publishers, but for friends, fellow musicians, patrons, aristocrats and acquaintances, often to commemorate a particular occasion or relationship. Unlike collections that Rossini himself prepared for publication--such as the Soirees musicales or the celebrated Peches de vieillesse--many of these compositions remained unpublished, surviving only in manuscripts or scattered early editions. Several of the works presented here receive their first-ever publication and world-premiere recording. The programme is equally fascinating for its exploration of multiple versions of the same works, including several settings of Mi lagnero tacendo and Un'empia mel rapi. Together with pianist Adele D'Aronzo, Anna Bonitatibus adopts an approach rooted in intimacy rather than operatic display. Their refined partnership allows these miniature masterpieces to unfold with elegance, warmth and remarkable naturalness, revealing them not as peripheral curiosities but as an essential facet of Rossini's artistic personality.
