Description
Saxophonist Peter Van Huffel's approach to music is an uncompromising one. Powerful, full of energy and sometimes brutal, his group Gorilla Mask is inspired by sources ranging from Albert Ayler, John Zorn, and Peter Brotzmann to Jimi Hendrix, Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine. Consequently their first recording is a mixture of jazz, hard rock, grunge and metal with the leader's expressive saxophone to the fore.
Also part of the group is the sonorous, and occasionally threatening, double bass of Roland Fidezius and the relentless drums and percussion of Rudi Fischerlehner. For all the music's vitality, Van Huffel's modus operandi is a simple one: the start performances at a high energy level and to keep building on this. The result is just under an hour of music making which is undoubtedly hard edged but also at the same time intellectual and emotional, structured and free.
Personnel: Peter Van Huffel (alto saxophone), Roland Fidezius (acoustic bass & noise), Rudi Fischerlehner (drums & toys)
