The musical selections chosen by director Anthony Minghella for The Talented Mr. Ripley are largely inspired by the character of jazz enthusiast Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law). Jazz recordings by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, among others, are interwoven with excerpts from Gabriel Yared's Oscar-nominated score. Vocal performances by cast members Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow appear on the album's opening tracks. One of its emotional highlights is "Lullaby for Cain", written by Gabriel Yared and performed by Sinead O'Connor. It is one of those remarkable additions that makes this soundtrack truly outstanding. While the darker melodies set the tone for the film's storyline, the score also captures the dreamlike atmosphere that brings the Italian landscape to life.The Talented Mr. Ripley stars Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, who is sent to Italy to persuade Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) to return home, away from the temptations of a luxurious lifestyle, women and alcohol.
