  • Description

Four Aces is leading UK jazz pianist Tim Richards' fourth trio album - this time with the new line-up of Alex Keen on bass and Daniel Howard on drums. Featuring a programme of five original compositions by the leader interspersed with jazz standards; McCoy Tyner (Atlantis), Kenny Barron (Sunshower), Mary Lou Williams (Free Spirits), Miles Davis (Solar), Hampton Hawes (Sonora) Antonio Carlos Jobim (Wave), this is a well-rounded selection of familiar standards and imaginative and memorable originals.

Described by The Observer as a "cornerstone of British jazz", Tim Richards' extensive career encompasses leadership of the long-running Spirit Level quartet/quintet in the '80s and '90s, followed by the nine-piece Great Spirit from 1999 and six-piece Hextet, which featured between them the cream of British jazz musicians such as Ed Jones, Dick Pearce, Pete King, Tony Kofi, Gilad Atzmon, Jason Yarde, Seb Rochford, and many others.

    Press:

"The trio combine the classic with the contemporary and are clearly enjoying themselves throughout the album, which engages from the start and consistently hits the spot." - **** All About Jazz

"Tim Richards is one of the great unsung heroes of British jazz and this is an unpretentious and highly enjoyable album that deserves to be widely heard." - **** The Jazz Mann

"On an album packed with so much quality music in terms of both playing and compositions, it is an impossible task to pick out favourite tracks as they change with each new hearing; but don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself." - Jazz Views

"Piano playing worthy of the grandmasters of the past by, arguably, a grandmaster of today." - Bebop Spoken Here

"The set wraps with Richards' infectious Blue Note styled New Cross Blues, it's not hard to imagine that one as the storming finale to a live performance." - UK Jazz News
