  • Description

Heavy-hitting and softly moving, Nostalgia for Modern Times is the psych-pop-swamp-grunge-anti-jazz debut album from British-Brazilian singer-songwriter Thomaz Martin.

Martin cut his teeth (and appropriately calloused his fingertips) playing in multiple Brazilian jazz ensembles around London. He released a cassette-only EP, Heart Murmur, in late 2024, before founding Man Made Tigers with Ann Liu Cannon, for whom he had previously served as a guitarist. The Brazilian-born London artist headed back into the studio last summer to conjure his debut full-length album.

A mid-90s record that never was, a Brazilian answer to Nevermind or a homage toThe White Album, all filtered through the intricacies of Tropicalia. Thomaz blends roaring guitars within an acoustic backdrop. His distinctive playing reminiscent of Neil Young meets Mark Knopfler. His songwriting as if Leonard Cohen were trying to write songs for Tom Petty. Thomaz projects musical mannerisms from the past into the future and presents his own sonic cornucopia.
