Description
This collection of trio tunes by Stan Tracey date from June 1959 and were clearly intended as a follow up release to 'Little Klunk', issued a month earlier, but for some unknown reason they never left the vaults. Recently discovered purely by accident in a studio clear out, this amazing material has just come to light, and at a time when British jazz in the Fifties has become a much sought after commodity.
Recorded on two dates, the first four standards include Tony Crombie on drums, who had a residency with his own band at the Flamingo around this period. The other tracks feature legendary Phil Seaman on drums and showcase Stan's own material, a wonderful insight to jazz in London in 1959 and a great indication of what was to follow in the ensuing years. Kenny Napper was the bassist of Stan's choice back then and he appears on all tracks.
So, after more than sixty years hidden in a pile of inconspicuous 1/4 inch tapes, ReSteamed Records are delighted to present for the first time 'The 1959 Sessions' of the maestro, Stan Tracey and his musicians, in a timely reminder of the outstanding quality of early British Be-bop.
Stan Tracey: piano
Kenny Napper: double bass
Tony Crombie, Phil Seamen: drums
Press:
"The songs bring out the Monkishness - displaced accents, sudden excursions into unlikely keys - all performed with faultless accuracy. The originals are more intriguing, because in each one the improvised solos grow inseparably out of the tune. The best of the lot, for me, is the splendid, up-tempo Pitter, Patter, Panic...shows that, by the start of the 60s, Tracey was already a force to be reckoned with." - **** The Observer
"London modern jazz was in an expansionist mood in 1959. Work in dance bands was plentiful, jazz gigs thrived in pub back rooms and major labels were knocking at the door. This delightful piano trio album, recorded at Decca Studios over two sessions, captures that optimistic mood with a confident swagger. The tapes, initially mislaid, were recently discovered in a studio clear-out and they now get a welcome first-time release." - **** Financial Times
"This hitherto surprisingly unreleased recording catches someone who would become a renowned band-leader himself, flexing his muscles and revelling in the process. - **** The Scotsman
"It's very welcome - as a reminder of Stan Tracey's compelling musical personality and as a fascinating new piece in the jig-saw depicting his notable career. Also, it's a great listen." - The Arts Desk
"This is a perfect setting for Stan Tracey, he does not need a horn, pure unadulterated Tracey...Stan Tracey is irreplaceable as we knew he would be. The music here is an invaluable addition." - Jazz Views
