Description
10th Anniversary, Debut Album Reissue.
"When you fail, as we all do, don't blame it on the smallest, the weakest of you" - A Little Deeper
Out of print for a several years Southern Tenant Folk Union's self-titled debut album is being reissued in a remastered with bonus tracks version to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
Acclaimed at the time with reviews in Rock N Reel, Uncut, The Irish Times, Insurgent Country and Americana UK the album reached No 5 on the Americana UK Chart (behind Lucinda Williams, Richmond Fontaine, The Damnwells & Redlands Palomino Company) and was supported on BBC national radio with airplay from Steve Lamacq, Ralph McLean, Sean Rowley and Mark Lamarr (on his late lamented Radio 2 God's Jukebox Show). A popular live act around London folk and Americana clubs at the time the album's release enabled the band to start touring further afield and would take them all across the UK and into Europe.
The launch concert itself was at The Luminaire in Kilburn on 24th January 2007 and saw Southern Tenant Folk Union on a bill with indie/alternative band Fanfarlo, The Zetland Players (with future Bristol-based brewery founder Michael Wiper from Wiper & True) as well as Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip opening the show (before their chart topping album success).
Now, seven albums into their career Southern Tenant Folk Union reissue this album that started it all. An album entirely recorded in a flat on Harlesden High street and mixed in a tenement on Leith Walk in Edinburgh it stands as a fine collection of songs, harmony vocals and heartfelt performance and it laid the ground for how the band was to continue in the years ahead; blending the old time roots sound with modern, sometimes political, lyrics.

Reviews of 'Southern Tenant Folk Union' from the time
"Gleefully uplifting bluegrass melancholy...this work deserves to escape the niche into which it has been born as it is a piece which contains both soul and beauty." - Keith Hargreaves, Americana UK
"STFU's gorgeous pop harmonies point firmly in the direction of the fine works of Dillard and Clarke. A brilliant debut." - Gerry Ranson, 4 stars, Rock N Reel
"A compelling mix of bluegrass, gospel, old time and celtic swing that is memorably embellished with warm and richly woven harmonies. McGarvey's songs are steeped in Americana, both in content and in context; inspired by the likes of the Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers, he and his five trusty acoustic brothers and sister reach for emotional highs and by and large make them" - Joe Breen, 4 Stars, Irish Times
