Founded by vocalist and oud player Stefan Sablic, Serbian group Shira u’tfila brings together a multi-ethnic, multi-faith ensemble that draws its inspiration from the diversity and richness of Judeo-Spanish, Ottoman-Turkish, Arabic and Balkan musical traditions.
The cd 'Biviendo en Kantando. Life as a Song' gives tribute to the singers and the
music from the Balkans in the decades before World War I. Based on old 78rpms by
Victoria Hazan, Isaac Angel, Haim Effendi and others, Shira u’tfila takes the listener to a
bygone era. Inspired renditions from the old songs in a new setting, based on the sound
of ud, qanun, violin and percussion, give the music a sephardic-arabic flavour.The second cd in this set holds 14 original songs, recorded around the turn of the century in Istanbul, New York and other places. Through the mists of time you can hear the original voices of Isaac Angel, Victoria Hazan and the other singers on whose work Shira u’tfila’s cd is based.
