Pia Fraus celebrates the anniversary of their breakthrough album with a reissue on vinyl.This year, dreampop/shoegaze band Pia Fraus from Tallinn celebrates the 20th anniversary of their first international album "In Solarium" with a limited edition of coloured vinyl."Our first album "Wonder what it 's like" was out in 2001 and right after it was released, we started sending our demos to record labels abroad. We burnt CD-Rs with three tracks on it - Moon LIke a Pearl, Summer Before Spring (Snafu remix), and our version of Depeche Mode 's Condemnation," says the bands leader Rein Fuks. " We sent altogether 9 such CD-Rs and strangely enough, as many as 3 labels responded. In the summer of 2001, we signed a contract with Clairecords from Sacramento. Their wish was to release a new Pia Fraus album as soon as possible. We found ourselves in a situation where our dream had come true, we had the contract, but we didn 't have enough songs for a whole album", Fuks recalls.""We dug out all our old demos and long-forgotten tracks that hadn 't made it even to the new album, as they appeared astoo raw or naive. We arranged and adjusted these tracks to the new Pia Fraus sound and recorded the album which in the end featured just 5 tracks - 400&57, No Need for Sanity, Outskirts of Me, On You and Zodalovers." We recorded the album in Tartu, in South Estonia, at the studio of a Rein 's good friend and mentor Lauri Liivak. "Lauri played in the most important shoegaze band of the time - Bizarre; and his role in our growth as individuals and as a band has really been huge. He invited us to his studio because he was, and still is, a real music fan and the first to see us as something promising. He saw something even we didn 't see." At Lauri 's studio, the members of Pia Fraus were introduced to the music of My Bloody Valentine, Dinusaur Jr, Yo La Tengo, and others that had a profound impact on the band."All this changed us and gave a direction towards where we are now." The album was recorded at Lauri 's Forwards studio by a young sound engineer Hendrik Luuk - an electronic music producer with an indie background, forming also half of the brilliant electronic duo UNI. "Hendrik Luuk had the greatest influence on the eventual sound of "In Solarium". He produced most of the synth sounds and gave far more than was expected of him," says Fuks.To celebrate the release of the album, Pia Fraus recorded new versions of two tracks on the album.
